Steedman Planning is delighted to have been invited to assist The Royal Channel Island Yacht Club (RCIYC) to review its plans to upgrade and refurbish its Club House. We have led a review of a feasibility study, to help the Club make early decisions about costed design choices.

Working with the Club and other members of the design team we have delivered a fully designed and costed design solution to progress to a positive review by the Jersey Architectural Commission and also positive pre-application advice from the Planning Applications Team.

Located prominently in St Aubin’s Village, the Royal Channel Island Club House occupies an iconic coastal edge site. Making changes to provide the Club with a fit for purpose facility requires a careful and thoughtful review of the building’s historic, village and community context. The Club House makes an important contribution to one of Jersey’s most prominent landscapes. It is located in St Aubin’s Village, soon to be Jersey’s first Conservation Area. It has long association with the boating and marine community.

Responding to the brief provided by the Royal Channal Island Yacht Club, Steedman Planning has led the review of site-specific issues requiring the retention of historic fabric, the delivery of village scale elevations appropriate to this prominent coastal edge site, together with the appropriateness of the design in the setting of the future conservation area. The design solution has included full structural and mechanical design proposals to enable rigorous costing.

The resulting building envelope gives a grounded and contextually appropriate base to the building with a light and open first floor to maximise the views of the bay whilst being mindful of sensitive residential neighbours. The spaces created internally focus on facilities for the Club’s community with a strong theme of flexible facilities for youth courses, training and events supported by the member’s bar and redesigned restaurant space, which benefits from fantastic first floor views across the bay and would enhance regatta viewing and the connection to sailing in the bay.
